Rehabilitating Swallowing and Communication Skills

The Speech-Language Pathology Department assists in the healing process of those who have swallowing disorders, speech/language disorders, and other related disorders that may make it difficult to swallow, express oneself, or understand the spoken or written word.

Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center provides all speech and audiological services on-site at the Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. All Speech Pathologists and Audiologists are New York State licensed. The Speech Pathologists also hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech & Hearing Association (ASHA).

The Speech Pathologists at Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center are also certified in providing Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), trade name-Vital Stim, to patients that have swallowing disorders (dysphagia).   This technique is new to the field of Speech Pathology and Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center leads the way in providing this service to those in need of it.

Speech Therapy treatments provide remediation for:

  • Dysarthria
  • Apraxia
  • Voice Disorders
  • Cognitive Communication Disorders
  • Aphasia
  • Dysphagia

Individualized diagnostic therapeutic services are conveniently implemented in
the comfort of the patients room. A private treatment area is also available if desired.

Services include:

  • Evaluations and treatment for swallowing and speech/language disorders
  • Patient and family education/training for recommendations upon returning to the community
  • Audiological (hearing) evaluations conducted by an audiologist in the facilities sound proof room
  • Hearing aid maintenance serviceTherapy to address possible memory or perceptual losses after a disability
