for daily living
The professionals in our Occupational Therapy Department
focus on enhancing the skills of daily living. In-house
Registered Occupational Therapists (OTRs) and Certified
Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) help patients
address daily living skills through a wide variety of
techniques including:
- Hands-on experience in dressing and cooking and use
of the full-scale bathroom, bedroom and kitchen models
in the OT Workshop
- Assessment of the patient’s safety, judgment and
endurance as they use a walking device or wheelchair
- Participation in the Brothers of Mercy Homeward
Bound Program that prepares patients for their return to
the community including shopping, meal preparation,
gardening and traveling
Recommendations for adaptive equipment to help patients
return to their optimal level of functioning
- Discharge preparation to help make the transition
back to the community a smooth one. Options include a
home visit, family training and/or a home exercise
program tailored to the patient’s unique needs
Occupational Therapy treatments include:
- Self-care and feeding skills reinforcement or
retraining
- Assistance with homemaking skills
- Balance and mobility improvement
- Increased arm strength, coordination and range of
motion training
- Therapy to address possible memory or perceptual
losses after a disability
