JOB TITLE: Certified Nursing Assistant

I. JOB SUMMARY:

Provides direct personal resident care services including safety,
comfort, and personal hygiene. All care is delivered in keeping with the facility's
policies and procedures under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical
nurse.

II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Performs duties related to resident care consistent with health care principles and facility policies:

a.  Promotes resident hygiene and comfort.
b.  Distributes food/water and feeds residents.
c.  Assists with repositioning and transferring residents.
d.  Ambulates and transports residents.
e.  Collects, measures, records; urine, stool and sputum specimens as directed.
f.  Records and totals fluid intake and output.
g.  Empties drainage containers and records amount.
h.  Weighs residents.
i.  Applies elastic stockings and restraints.
j.  Documents on flow sheets.
k.  Assists with admission, discharge and postmortem care.
l.  Responds to call lights in a timely manner.
m.  Performs perineal care and uncomplicated colostomy care.
n.  Reports all observations and assessments to the Team Leader, Nurse Manager
      or Charge Nurse.
o.  Takes and records vital signs.
p.  Makes beds and keeps resident's units clean and in order.
q.  Prepares room for housekeeping after resident discharge.

2. Performs duties to maintain unit activities, environment, and safety:

a. Assists with setting up and maintaining supplies for Isolation/Precautions and
removal of Isolation/Precaution equipment, linen and trash.
b. Observes precautions to insure a safe environment for the resident

3. Attends all mandatory in-services as required. Attends and participates in in-service education classes, on-the-job training programs etc., as scheduled or directed.

4. Works with safety in mind at all times:

a. Assure that established infection control and universal precautions practices are maintained when performing duties.
b. Report all hazardous conditions or equipment to supervisor.
c. Follow established fire safety policies and procedures.
d. Assures that assigned work areas are maintained in a clear, safe, comfortable and
attractive manner.
e. Keep work/assignment areas free of hazardous objects such as unnecessary equipment, supplies, etc.
f. Proper use and operation of equipment

4. Maintain confidentiality of resident information.

5. Honor the resident's personal and property rights.

III. OTHER RELATED DUTIES:

1. Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as directed.

2. Assists with receiving, distributing, storing and cleaning equipment and supplies.

FOR NURSE AIDE TRAINEES: A Nurse Aide Trainee (NAT) is an employee who is
participating in a N.Y.S. approved RHCF Nurse Aide Training Program. The NAT may provide
specific care and services as listed above for which the NAT has demonstrated competence. The
NAT must successfully complete the facility's N.Y.S. approved 100 Hour Nurse Aide Training
Program. After completing the 100 Hour Nurse Aide Training Program the NAT must pass the
N.Y.S. RHCF Clinical Skills Examination and Written Examination to become a Certified
Nursing Assistant and be listed in the N.Y.S. RHCF Nurse Aide Registry. The NAT will be
under the direct supervision of the NAT Program Coordinator, Nursing Supervisor or Charge
Nurse when providing care or services to residents/patients. Work Areas will include the In-
service Classroom and Nursing Units.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposed to blood and body fluids through direct personal resident care (Category I exposure). Works in well lighted/ventilated areas. Subject to frequent
interruptions. Involved with residents/patients, family members, visitors, etc. under all conditions and circumstances. Subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family
members, etc. Communicates with nursing personnel, and other departments. Willing to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary. Subject to
falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc. throughout the workday.

V. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

High school education or equivalency preferred. No
specific experience required. Training provided. Entry level position.

VI. QUALIFICATIONS:

Certified Nursing Assistants must possess a N.Y.S. certificate
and be listed in the N.Y.S. RHCF Nurse Aide Registry. Must be 16 years of age. Must possess
the ability to: relate to and work with ill, disabled elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile
people within the facility, follow written and oral instructions; make independent decisions;
accept direction and corrective comments; deal tactfully and work harmoniously with personnel,
resident's, family members, and visitors; seek out new methods and principles and be willing to
incorporate them into existing practices; function independently; be flexible, demonstrate
personal integrity.

VII. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires a considerable amount of standing,
walking, bending, stretching, lifting of residents and equipment, carrying of supplies, and moving
intermittently during working hours. Must be able to read, write, speak, communicate and
understand the English language.
